Dealing with my black, short 4b hair hasn’t been the easiest !
If you’d asked me what I wanted to do with my natural hair about a month ago I’d have simply replied, Cut! Cut!! Cut!!!
For some reasons I didn’t fully understand why I was seriously shedding a lot of hair and why I was constantly battling with my hair. All I wanted was faster growth, softer hair, deeper curls and I just wanted to look like those young ladies in the 80’s.🙂
But guess what, my hair refused to turn out this way. So I kept on asking Mother Nature ‘Is this too much to ask for?’ but unfortunately I got no reply from Mother Nature hair, so I decided to explore after many concoctions.
I did a quick analysis recently with a few of my friends on natural hair by putting up some question polls on my social media accounts and messaging some of them directly to ask if they have also been struggling with what I’ve been struggling with.
To my greatest surprise, I got a lot of replies and this made me realize how we are all in this together ( 🎶 High School Musical 🎵). I was sensitive enough to notice we are actually struggling with the same things.
So in this post, I got all my sis🤗.
I’d be standing for all my girls as we share our struggles with the hope of getting better solutions sooner, later or at the comment section.

Our Little Struggles
Hair Envy
Oooh my ....! “Lizzy I love your hair! I can’t wait for my hair to look exactly like yours!!”
Gbam!!! Well, Sis I know you want to reach hair goals as soon as possible but this is actually the first problem most of us face. When we see someone with our hair goals we often admire the beauty that comes with it and that’s perfectly fine but it becomes a problem when we immediately want the volume of our hair to be that loud, without acknowledging the fact that our hair needs treatment and attention for it for get to the flaunting stage.
Shrinkage
I know there’s nothing as annoying as when our hair shrinks after we’ve planned amazing packing styles (like sleek bun😫). Yes, this could be annoying but overtime we get to stick to the reality of our hair type.
Hair shrinkage is the norm for any type 4 hair and the best way to keep our hair from
shrinking is to give it a proper knot.
Set reminders to always weave your hair before going to bed and before your amazing packing styles.
Cost Factor
😂😂😂😂 My GIF says it all.
Treating and maintaining natural hair is just like throwing money out of a local man’s window. It could be budget stripping as it takes three times the amount of maintaining relaxed hair.
Tangles
It almost like no amount of oil or size of comb can properly detangle our hair without breaking. We often hear people say, ‘use a wide-tooth comb to detangle, it’s best for natural hair.’ Yes, wide-tooth comb is really good but over these past years of me trying to maintain my hair I have noticed there is nothing as suitable as finger detangling.
Finger detangling is bae, it helps you to be more gentle with your hair and tames breakage. When you use your fingers, you’re more likely to feel less pain or no pain at all. And I think this is great for naturals who have tender scalps.
Gel Talks
Finding the perfect gel that holds our hair well is another work. The famous gel, Eco styler that works for Lizzy has refused to work for Temi.
Yes! Eco styler which is seen as all doing does not work wonders for some of us. So we try other gels until we finally find our spectacular spec.
I have recently discovered “Gorilla snot”.
Gorilla snot comes in different colors and this gel goes well for any type 4 hair.
I hope you check it out.
All Time Protective Styles
Hair Stylist: Temi, what hair are you making?
Me: Uhmmm, I want Ghana weaving, ‘shuku’😌
Hair Stylist: shuku!!??? (sounds surprise😯)
No, Temi you can’t make ghana weaving yet you’re still trying to reach hair goals.
Temi: Ahn Ahn! protective style again😩🥺
.....everytime protective styles. It becomes really boring because we also want to explore with our hair, but at the same time we are scared of chronic shedding and breakage.
Protective styles vary according to individuals. What I see as protective styles may be different from what Lizzy sees as protective styles.
As naturals we should know the best style that suits our hair texture and stick to it.
Personally, everytime I make ghana weaving my front hair goes down with it. Instead of battling with front hair later, I would rather stick to my braids, twist or sleek bun😌
......Here comes the end of this post......
Your Body is a Temple
This is so great Temi. More knowledge🥰
😂😂! I can so relate, loved this post a lot! Keep it uppp
